School Visits

We welcome school visits.

We have found that children love visiting the windmill - there are many unusual things to see and do whilst, at the same time, learning about how we used to live. Climbing the 5 floors to the cap to see the great brake wheel and drive mechanism is, in itself, a safe but exciting experience. We have recreated original early 19th century costumes that children may try on and they can also experience grinding corn on a 2,500-year-old quern.

We have developed activities for children of different ages, with the answers to the quizzes to be found around the mill:

Kidz kwiz 1: 7-11 years.
   “        “   2: 11-13 years.

Quiz sheet 3 11-13 years.
   “         “    4: 12-15 years.

Miller’s knots: 7-15 years.

Mill Yard fossils: Suitable for 7-15 years.

Summer seeds and spices quiz: suitable for all ages.

Drawing: Additionally, the mill provides an unusual subject to draw for all ages from 5 years upwards.

Social history and history of technology:
We have written a booklet about the history of milling, how the windmill came to be built and the technical innovations that made it possible, which is suitable for GCSE students.

Phone us to arrange a visit (Dr Susan Tebby on 01455 209608).

We will provide well-informed, CRB cleared, guides.
